Celtic tree of life - why we respect and love this symbol

Trees for the Ancient Celts, especially those tracing back to the Druids time were living beings attributed with many powers. Apart from that they provided shelter, food and warmth and were integral to human life.

The Celtic symbol tree of life has been carried down over the centuries and till today is portrayed in several ways. Each way depicting image similar to original Celtic tree of life.

Celtic Tree of life symbol shows a tree with roots and branches that are interwoven with each other.

The roots which were considered the foundation symbolized the Other World. 

The trunk of the tree which joined both roots and the branches signified their connection to the universe of mighty entities. 

Druids believed that the roots and branches were connected to the worlds above and below while the trunk remained in the present world. In their believing the trunk acted as a connection with other worlds.

For the Druids each tree held different and special meaning. Some were believed that trees carry messages to the where spirits lived.  Others believed that trees could bestow blessings such as prosperity or love. 

Celts were believed that if one fell asleep next to a tree they had the ability to wake up in the fairly world. 


Celtic tree of life meaning in present time

In present time tree of life is a symbol that has become very popular because it depicts nature and the worship of nature. In Gaelic language it is called "crann bethadh". 

The trees symbolize life force, something that has the ability to support the life of nature and humans. Trees provide food, fuel and shelter. They house and sustain other life forces such as animals or insects and have for many years held great purpose for human beings. In present time peoples trying to be closer with nature and that's why using ancient symbols to show connection between human and nature. 


The tree of life - symbol of rebirth the life

When the trees went through seasonal changes the Celts tracked them in much esteem. As these trees underwent what they considered birth, death and rebirth the Celts participated in rituals to mark these changes.

The Celtic tree of life symbolizes strength, longevity, wisdom and  endurance of time and show the connections between earth, the spirit world and the universe.

The tree of life has long been associated with many cultures other than the Celts because the trees are recognized as being able to sustain and protect humans life.
